Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin. It is a disorder of the skin’s pilosebaceous unit, which consists of an oil gland (sebaceous gland) and a canal (pore) that contains a hair called a follicle. The pore becomes blocked and causes lesions commonly known as pimples.
Acne affects young people more often though it can be found in adults as well.
Acne happens when oil (sebaceous) glands come to life around puberty, when these glands are stimulated by male hormones that are produced in the adrenal glands of both boys and girls. The oil glands, which are located just beneath the skin, continuously produce and secrete oil through openings in the skin. The oil lubricates and protects the skin. Under certain circumstances, cells that are close to the openings of the oil glands block the openings. This causes a buildup of oil underneath the skin. Bacteria that are present in everyone's skin, feast on these oil, and then multiply, and cause the surrounding tissues to become inflamed.
Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, shoulders and chest.
