Phytochemistry

Gaultheria fragrantissima is a source of methyl salicylate. The principle constituents of Boswellia serrata are acetyl 11- keto-beta boswellic acid, 11-keto beta-boswellic acid, acetyl betaboswellic acid and beta-boswellic acid1. Cineole (62%) and pinene (24%) are the principal active constituents of the eucalyptus oil. The principal constituents of Vitex negundo are casticin, isoorientin, chrysophenol D, luteolin, phydroxybenzoic acid, D- ructose, lignans (negundins A and B), diasyringaresinol, lyoniresinol, vitrofolal E, vitrofolal2, and flavone (vitexicarpin) 3. The Boerrhavia diffusa contains alkaloids (0.05%), triacontanol hentriacontane, ß-sitosterol, ursolic acid, 5,7-dihydroxy-3,4-dimethyoxy-6,8-dimethyl flavone, and an unidentified ketone (m p 86°). The roots contain the rotenoid boeravinones AI, BI, C2 , D, E and F besides the new dihydroisofurenoxanthin, borhavine and an anti-fibrinolytic agent, punarnavoside. Two lignans, liriodendrin and syringaresinol mono-ß-D-glucoside, have also been reported in the roots4.

Clinical Pharmacology

Boswellia serrata has potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. Boswellic acids from Boswellia serrata enhance the catabolism of GAGs. Methyl salicylate (Gaultheria fragrantissima) produces rubefacient action by causing dilation of the capillaries and an increase in blood circulation. Eucalyptus globulus has analgesic, anti-neuralgic properties and increases blood circulation. Boerrhavia diffusa has analgesic properties.
